Judges 14:3 Meaning Then His Father and His Mother Said

Then his father and his mother said to him, “Isn’t there a woman among your brothers’ daughters, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?” Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she pleases me well.”

What does Judges 14:3 mean?

Self-Help

When one desire fills the whole frame, the alternatives stop counting as options and the choice is already finished.

Desire narrows the field before reason gets its turn. A young man whose eyes are full of one person is not weighing anybody, because every other option has been deleted from the list he is choosing from, and a list of one feels like certainty while operating as tunnel vision. Parents reciting alternatives cannot restore what attention has already removed; only a redirected look does that.

Pleasure was the whole criterion, and pleasure this close always outweighs a consequence years out, since only one of the two is in view. A man who never puts the later price in front of his eyes spends his strength on a life his eyes picked for him before he ever deliberated.

Live Judges 14:3 today

  1. When you are three taps from buying it or sending it, put the phone face down for ten minutes and do something physical. If it still makes sense after, do it, and most of the time it will not.
  2. Ask someone who loves you what they see that you do not, about the person, the job, the purchase, the plan. Then stay quiet while they answer instead of defending the thing.
  3. Before the choice that only feels good right now, say out loud what it looks like a year from today. The later price has to be in front of your eyes, not filed somewhere behind them.

What have you stopped considering because one option is filling the whole screen?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Craving grows like a vine over an untended mind, and the one it covers cannot see past its own leaves. Seeing the craving as craving is the first opening.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When something looks irresistible, hold it at a distance and give yourself time, and the impression loses its grip. Desire that is never examined does the choosing for you.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The senses drag the mind off like wind drags a boat. The steady person is not the one without desire but the one who keeps the long view in sight while desiring.
