Judges 19:22 Meaning As They Were Making Their Hearts Merry

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”

What does Judges 19:22 mean?

The sons of Belial besieging the house are the base, worthless impulses of the lower nature swarming the body and beating at its openings the moment the person relaxes into ease. The house is the body, its master is the ruling mind, and the guest is a higher visitor taken in for shelter.

The sons of Belial besieging the house are the base, worthless impulses of the lower nature swarming the body and beating at its openings the moment the person relaxes into ease. The house is the body, its master is the ruling mind, and the guest is a higher visitor taken in for shelter. These clamoring appetites demand that the elevated element be handed down to them, dragged into their level and used up in the flesh.

Belial means without worth or without yoke, the ungoverned craving that acknowledges no rule. Merry and off guard, the inner house is surrounded by these unyoked drives pounding to seize whatever rises above them.

City: the settled mass of habits and thoughts a person builds up around the self House: the body, the dwelling in which the ruling mind and its guests reside Sons of Belial: the worthless, unyoked cravings of the lower nature that acknowledge no rule Door: the opening of the body through which the lower drives press to reach what is within

  1. When you are relaxed on the couch and the craving shows up, for the drink, the scroll, the thing you said you were done with, name it out loud as a visitor at the door before you decide anything.
  2. If a group chat starts pulling you into tearing somebody apart, stay in it but do not hand over the thing you actually respect about that person. Hold the door on that.
  3. On the drive home after a draining day, pick what comes in through the speakers instead of letting whatever plays decide your mood for the evening.
