Judges 19:25 · World English Bible

Judges 19:25 Meaning But the Men Wouldn’t Listen to Him

But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.

What does Judges 19:25 mean?

This is the fate of the soul when it is handed over to the base energies of a person, for the concubine is the feminine, receptive part of consciousness, the tender inner life offered up to appetite. The men who will not hearken are the lower drives of the body, the mob of unbridled desire that seizes what is given and uses it through the whole dark span of ignorance.

Night is that darkness, the long unconscious stretch in which the higher nature is misused by the lower.

When day begins to spring they release her, for the rising light of awareness ends the reign of the appetites, and the coming of inner dawn is the only thing that loosens their grip. The abused soul is let go at the exact moment consciousness begins to wake.

Concubine: the feminine, receptive soul, the tender inner life surrendered to appetite Night: the long dark stretch of ignorance in which the lower nature misuses the higher Day beginning to spring: the rising of inner light and awareness that ends the reign of the appetites

  1. The next time you are two hours into something you did not choose, the feed, the show, the late-night snacking, say to yourself plainly: this is the long night. Just seeing it is where it loosens.
  2. When somebody starts handing over a part of themselves to keep the peace in a room, a conviction, a boundary, a dignity, say something kind that gives it back to them.
  3. Under pressure at work, when the fastest way out is to sell off something you care about, pause long enough to feel the cost before you agree.

What part of me have I been handing over just to get through the night?
