Judges 19:29 Meaning When He Had Come Into His House

When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

What does Judges 19:29 mean?

The knife is the dividing power of the analyzing mind, cutting the once-whole feeling body into parts and scattering them across the full field of the self. The number 12 is the number of the complete circle, the whole zodiac of powers within a person, the 12 tribes that make one entire being.

The knife is the dividing power of the analyzing mind, cutting the once-whole feeling body into parts and scattering them across the full field of the self. The number 12 is the number of the complete circle, the whole zodiac of powers within a person, the 12 tribes that make one entire being. To carve the body into 12 and send the pieces to every coast is to break the unified life into its full set of separated faculties, sown through the entire territory of consciousness. What was one is now measured out across the whole, felt everywhere and joined nowhere.

Knife: the severing edge of the reasoning mind that divides the living whole into parts it can handle. Concubine: the body and its feeling nature, the flesh-companion of the self, here cut and dispersed. 12 pieces: the number 12 as the complete set of powers in a person, the full round of faculties broken apart. The coasts of Israel: the whole territory of the inner being, every border of the self reached by the scattering.

  1. When you catch yourself taking apart a feeling instead of feeling it, naming it, explaining it, assigning it a cause, stop analyzing and let it be one unexplained thing for a minute.
  2. Try one conversation today where you do not diagnose the other person at all. No summing them up, no theory about why they are like that, just them in front of you.
  3. When you are pulled in six directions at once, pick one and put the other five out of sight. Being everywhere in pieces is the same as being nowhere.

Where have I split something whole into parts I can handle, and what did I lose doing it?
