Judges 4:21 Meaning Then Jael Heber’s Wife Took a Tent

Then Jael Heber’s wife took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and struck the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground, for he was in a deep sleep; so he fainted and died.

What does Judges 4:21 mean?

The killing blow lands at the temples, and the temple is always the head where the higher mind sits enthroned. Sisera is the exhausted general of the lower nature, the force that has driven and warred and now lies asleep and weary in a person, its energy spent.

Esoteric

The killing blow lands at the temples, and the temple is always the head where the higher mind sits enthroned. Sisera is the exhausted general of the lower nature, the force that has driven and warred and now lies asleep and weary in a person, its energy spent. The still, quieter power that pins him drives a single point through those temples and fastens it to the ground, drawing the running mind down and holding it fixed to the earth of the body.

What war could not stop, stillness finishes while the lower force sleeps. The restless drive dies when the sharp point of attention is set at the seat of thought and held there without moving.

Nail: the single fixed point of attention driven through wandering thought Temples: the head, the seat of the higher mind where consciousness is enthroned Tent: the loosely pitched dwelling of the body, temporary and easily struck Ground: the earth of the body to which the running mind is fastened and stilled

Live Judges 4:21 today

  1. Pick one thing today and give it your whole attention for ten minutes with the phone in another room. Not more effort, just one point, held.
  2. When a conversation is spinning in circles, stop adding to it. Be the still one in the room and watch how much the spinning needed your help.
  3. When your mind is racing after something went wrong, put your feet flat on the floor and feel them there. Fasten yourself to the ground until the racing runs out.

What has been running in your head for weeks that only stillness will ever stop?

The same truth in other traditions

Patanjali, Yoga Sutras

Attention held on one point, without wavering, is what finally quiets a mind that no amount of struggling could settle.

Tao Te Ching

Stillness is the master of movement. What rushes about eventually tires, and what stays still is still there when it does.

Zen

Sitting does nothing dramatic. It simply keeps one point of attention fixed until the restless mind, having nowhere left to run, comes to rest.
