EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Awake, awake. This is the oldest call there is, spoken not to your body but to the consciousness asleep inside your thoughts. For most of your life you have been carried by a mind you mistook for yourself, as though living in a dream.

To awaken is to rise from that dream and know yourself as the awareness behind it. Then the thoughts and emotions that once held you captive, that drove you and defined you, come under your quiet observation. What was your master becomes something you simply watch. You lead your captivity captive, for the mind that ruled you now serves the presence you have become.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

What a person says to themselves out loud sets the state that decides whether they can do the thing at all.

Language is a lever on state, and it works hardest aimed inward and shaped as a command rather than a description. The words set focus, focus reorganizes the body, and the emotion arrives after the physiology, not before it.

Calling on yourself by name, twice, is a refusal to wait on mood; the repetition is the lever pulled again until it moves. Singing is breath under pressure, physiology raised on purpose, and the order to a fighting man comes second because no one lifts another into a state they are not standing in. A person who waits to feel ready hands the timing of their life to whatever mood shows up, and what only they could have led goes unled.

Live Judges 5:12 today

  1. Three times today, stop for one breath and ask, what is happening right now, and who is aware of it. That small gap is the waking up, and it does not need to last long.
  2. When irritation rises with someone close to you, name it inside yourself, there is anger, instead of speaking from it. Watching it takes the handle out of its grip.
  3. In traffic or on a crowded train, let yourself feel the impatience without feeding it a story about the people around you. You stay in charge of the mood instead of the mood being in charge of you.

Which of your reactions today ran you, and which one did you actually see?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism

The Buddha's name simply means the one who woke up. He was asked what he was and said only that, not a god, not a man, just awake.

Hinduism · Upanishads

There is the one who acts and suffers, and the one who quietly watches it all. Knowing the difference is the whole turn.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

He dreamed he was a butterfly, then woke and could not say which was the dream. The question is whether anyone is awake inside the life you are living.
