Judges 5:5 Meaning The Mountains Quaked Yahweh’s Presence

The mountains quaked Yahweh’s presence, even Sinai at the presence of Yahweh, the God of Israel.

What does Judges 5:5 mean?

If the oldest mountains tremble when their Maker draws near, what excuse has a hard heart for feeling nothing? Sinai does not resist.

Sufism

If the oldest mountains tremble when their Maker draws near, what excuse has a hard heart for feeling nothing? Sinai does not resist. It lets the presence show through it, the way still water takes the shape of whatever is poured in.

The fault is pride so settled it stays unmoved. The cure is small: to grow quiet, remember the One who made every solid thing, and let that memory shake the pride loose. What made Sinai famous was never the stone, but the nearness the stone could not conceal.

Live Judges 5:5 today

  1. Stand outside for two minutes with your phone face down in your pocket. Let something old and large be in front of you, a tree, a hill, the sky, without needing to photograph it.
  2. In a conversation today, let yourself be moved by what the other person says instead of waiting out their turn. Say "I had not thought of it that way" and mean it.
  3. When criticism lands and your chest goes stiff, breathe once before answering. Softness here is not weakness, it is just leaving a door open.

What in me has gone so solid that nothing gets through anymore?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 8

Water is praised because it takes every shape it is poured into and never argues with the ground. Its softness is what lets it get everywhere stone cannot.

Zen · Shunryu Suzuki

The beginner's mind is held up as the real goal, because a mind already full has no room left for what is actually in front of it. Expertise makes a hard surface.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The teaching is that the same presence fills the mountain, the river, and the person looking at them. Hardness is only a failure to let what is already there show through.
