A leader who can be watched at the moment of highest risk transfers more certainty than any explanation ever will.

People who cannot see the reason behind an order will still execute it if they can watch someone go first and come through. With no time to install understanding in three hundred men, the whole plan compresses into a body to copy, and the leader absorbs the first risk so the imitation costs less.

The sequence runs from action to state, not the reverse. Moving in time with someone certain manufactures certainty in the follower, and that state supplies the nerve for whatever the next instruction turns out to be. Wait to feel ready before moving and the opening closes while the readiness is still being negotiated.

Live Judges 7:17 today

  1. There is a thing you keep meaning to start and keep waiting to feel ready for. Do the first ninety seconds of it today while you still feel unprepared, because the feeling arrives on the far side of the motion.
  2. Instead of explaining to your kid or your new coworker how to do the hard part, do it next to them while they watch, and let them take the second one. Take the awkward first attempt yourself so theirs costs less.
  3. When the group chat or the team is frozen and nobody wants to go first, go first. Send the message, make the call, raise the hand, and watch how quickly others move once somebody has.

Who is waiting to see you do it before they will try?

Tao Te Ching 17

The best leader works so that people barely cite instructions; the work gets done and they feel it was theirs. Presence does the teaching that commands cannot.

The apprentice in the old monastery kitchens learned by standing beside the cook, hands copying hands, long before any word of explanation came.

Stoicism · Seneca

The long road is teaching by rules, the short one by example. A life you can watch persuades in a way argument never does.
