Design the situation so retreat is impossible and courage stops depending on how you feel that day.

The most reliable way to change what a person does is to remove what they can still do instead. Hands holding a torch and a trumpet cannot also hold a sword, so three hundred men were locked into a strategy they had no physical ability to abandon halfway.

That is a must engineered into the situation rather than held in the mind, and the panic that tore through the camp was released by men who had made their own retreat impossible first. Leaving the means of retreat within reach costs a person the commitment itself, because the fallback gets used and afterward gets called prudence.

Live Judges 7:19 today

  1. Pick the thing you keep starting and quitting, and remove the way out today. Delete the app, put the phone in another room overnight, cancel the subscription, hand the snacks to a neighbor.
  2. Tell one person exactly what you are going to do and when, and ask them to check. A promise spoken out loud is harder to quietly let go of than one kept in your head.
  3. When the hard conversation is coming, book the time and say so before you lose your nerve. Standing in the room with the meeting already on both calendars is easier than standing outside it deciding.

Which back door are you keeping open, and what is it costing you to keep it?
