Lamentations 1:2 Meaning She Weeps Bitterly in the Night

She weeps bitterly in the night. Her tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her. They have become her enemies.

What does Lamentations 1:2 mean?

Soka-parideva: Sorrow and Lamentation Grief that has found a voice. Tears standing on her cheeks in the dark, with no one awake to wipe them, sit inside the first truth rather than outside it, since the Buddha counted weeping among the plain facts of a life.

Buddhism

Soka-parideva: Sorrow and Lamentation Grief that has found a voice. Tears standing on her cheeks in the dark, with no one awake to wipe them, sit inside the first truth rather than outside it, since the Buddha counted weeping among the plain facts of a life. Night is when the daytime business of the city goes quiet and the loss can be felt at full size, which is why she weeps then and not at noon.

Taṇhā: Craving Thirst, the reaching toward whatever looks able to hold us. Her lovers were the neighboring kings she courted for protection, treaty after treaty, each one promising that this time she would be safe. Thirst does not inspect the well before drinking, and a city moving from lover to lover is doing what a thirsty person does at a dry cistern: coming back because it held water once.

Mitta-paṭirūpaka: The Counterfeit Friend The friend in appearance only, who takes and flatters while the goods last. Among the Buddha's four of these is the companion who drinks with you while you are spending and is nowhere to be found afterward, which is the shape of every ally who signed with her while grain still filled the storehouses. Their treachery was in the arrangement from the start, and became visible when there was nothing left to take.

Vipariṇāma: Change and Reversal Things turning into their opposite while you are still holding them. Men who once ate at her table now stand with the besiegers outside the wall, the same faces carrying a different meaning. Nothing new arrived to make them enemies; conditions shifted and the friendship went with them, the way a crowd thins when the sky darkens.

Saraṇa: Refuge A shelter that holds when the weather turns. Frightened people run to hills and groves and sacred trees, the Buddha said, and none of that ground is safe to stand on; her night of counting lovers and finding no comforter among them is that discovery arriving all at once. The empty room is bleak, and it is also her first honest accounting, the place where a refuge independent of anyone's goodwill becomes possible to look for.

Live Lamentations 1:2 today

  1. If you wake at two in the morning with the whole thing sitting on your chest, don't reach for your phone to make it go quiet. Let yourself feel it at full size for a while; night is simply when the daytime noise stops covering it.
  2. Look at who actually showed up the last time you had nothing to offer, and thank one of those people today by name. That is your real list, and it is usually shorter and better than the one in your contacts.
  3. When a group or a job or a person stops giving you the approval you have been running on, resist going straight to the next source. Sit in the gap for a day and see what in you is still standing there without it.

If nobody praised me this week, what would I still be sure of?

Pirkei Avot 5:16

A bond that rests on getting something ends the moment that something is gone. A bond that rests on the person keeps going when there is nothing left to gain.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Whatever depends on other people is not really yours. Build your peace on their approval and you have handed it over to them to keep or throw away.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi opens with a reed crying at night for the bed it was cut from. The longing itself is the thread back, so the ache is not a sign that something has gone wrong in you.
