Lamentations 3:51 Meaning My Eye Affects My Soul

My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.

What does Lamentations 3:51 mean?

A man can be honest about his grief and still be responsible for how long he holds it in view. What the eyes take in gets delivered straight to the emotions, with no stop along the way for judgment.

A man can be honest about his grief and still be responsible for how long he holds it in view.

What the eyes take in gets delivered straight to the emotions, with no stop along the way for judgment. Looking at suffering produces suffering in the body of the one looking, which is wiring rather than weakness. The state that arrives then decides what a man can carry and what he has left to offer the people still alive around him.

Grief unlooked at is not honored, only deferred. Yet the same man who reports what his eyes are costing him recovers hope later by deliberately calling God's mercies to mind, which proves the channel runs both directions. A person who never learns to aim it lives at the mercy of whatever the street happens to show him that morning.

Live Lamentations 3:51 today

  1. When you catch yourself twenty minutes into videos of something terrible, put the phone face down and sit still for one minute before you pick anything else up. Then choose one real thing you are grateful for and let your eyes rest on it, a window, a photo, your own hands.
  2. If someone you love is carrying something heavy, stay with them and let it reach you, then afterward do one small ordinary thing together, make tea, take a walk, so you both come back up with something left to give.
  3. Before a hard meeting or a hospital visit, decide ahead of time what you will look at when it gets heavy, one person's face, the plan on the page. Your body will follow whatever your eyes keep choosing, and you get to choose first.

What have I been looking at lately, and what has it been costing the people right in front of me?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that we are not shaken by what happens but by the view we take of it, and that the view is the one thing in our hands. The feeling follows the seeing, so the seeing is where the work is.

Buddhism · guarding the sense doors

The Buddha compared the senses to gates of a city, and taught watchfulness over what comes through them, because what enters the eye does not stay at the eye. He did not teach looking away from suffering, he taught compassion held steady rather than drowned.

Bhagavad Gita 6

Krishna says the mind can be a person's best friend or their worst enemy, depending on whether it has been trained. Untrained, it drags them wherever its impressions lead.
