The word behind offering means what is brought near, so the animal is how a person closes the distance. Limiting it to herd and flock keeps the gift inside a household's livestock, the wealth it lived on, so nothing hunted could stand in its place. Drawing near runs on God's appointment, and the sacrifice that finally opens the way is one God supplies Himself in Christ.

Live Leviticus 1:2 today

  1. Give something today that you will actually feel, an hour of your evening, money you had other plans for. A gift that costs you nothing was never really a gift.
  2. Ask one person what would actually help them, then do that instead of the help you had in mind. Coming near someone means meeting them on their terms, not yours.
  3. When you are stretched thin and tempted to send a quick text instead of showing up, show up. Ten minutes of your real presence beats a warm message you sent while doing three other things.

When I give, am I giving what I have, or what I can spare without feeling it?
