Leviticus 20:26 Meaning You Shall Be Holy to Me

You shall be holy to me, for I, Yahweh, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine.

Being claimed comes first, and the conduct is only what staying consistent with that claim looks like.

Belonging to someone changes what a person will tolerate in themselves. Severed out of the peoples and made his, a nation carries a definition that sets the standard, the standard sets what becomes intolerable in ordinary life, and that governs a thousand small choices no rule could ever reach.

The holiness is borrowed downward from Yahweh's own, which makes the conduct a family resemblance rather than an audition. A people who keep the practices while defining themselves as one nation among many will drift back to the neighbours' habits, since behaviour settles toward whatever definition it grew from.

Live Leviticus 20:26 today

  1. Start today by saying who you belong to before you open your email, one sentence, before the day starts telling you. It sets what you will put up with in yourself by nine o'clock.
  2. When the group chat turns to tearing someone apart, do not lecture anyone, just change the subject or go quiet. People feel a line without you naming one.
  3. When everyone at work is cutting the same corner and it looks normal, make the slower honest choice and do not advertise it. Belonging to someone means some things are simply not available to you, whatever the room is doing.

If I really carry God's name, what became normal to me this month that should not be?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

He reminded students that they are children of God, and said that remembering whose you are changes what you will think and do. The conduct comes out of the relationship.

Judaism · Mishnah Sanhedrin

The sages taught that each person is to say the world was created for their sake, carrying a weight of dignity that makes cheapness unbearable. Behavior follows from how precious you understand yourself to be.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi writes of the reed cut from the reed bed, whose whole song comes from longing for where it belongs. Being taken out and set apart is what gives the music its shape.
