CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Two distinct offerings appear side by side, one for sin and one for peace, and the pairing is not accidental. No one arrives at peace while pretending he has done no wrong. First comes the reckoning, the acknowledgment of the mark a person has left, and only afterward the communion.

Modern people want the peace without the confession, but it does not work that way. A man who refuses to name his failures stays at war with himself and everyone near him. Face what you have broken, make the account honest, and something settles. Reconciliation follows accountability. It cannot precede it.

Live Leviticus 23:19 today

  1. Before you let yourself off the hook about today, name the one thing you did that you would rather not look at. Said plainly to yourself, it stops following you around.
  2. If there is tension with someone, lead with your part instead of waiting for theirs. "I was short with you yesterday and I'm sorry" opens a door that no amount of pleasant small talk will.
  3. When something goes wrong at work and the room is looking for someone to blame, say your piece of it first. The defensiveness drains out of the room, and the actual problem becomes solvable.

What peace are you trying to feel without first saying the thing you did?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · Yom Kippur tradition

Before the day of atonement, wrongs between people are to be set right face to face. No ceremony closes the gap that an unspoken wrong keeps open.

Buddhism · monastic confession

The community gathers at set times to say aloud what each has done before they continue together. Peace in the sangha is built on that admission, not around it.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca examined each day before sleep, asking what fault he had cured and what he had merely excused. The calm he was after came only on the far side of that honest accounting.
