Leviticus 26:1 · World English Bible

Leviticus 26:1 Meaning You Shall Make for Yourselves No Idols

‘You shall make for yourselves no idols, and you shall not raise up a carved image or a pillar, and you shall not place any figured stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am Yahweh your God.

What does Leviticus 26:1 mean?

Make no image, and bow to no thing you can carve or set up before you. The mind loves to take what is limitless and freeze it into a form, a symbol, a fixed idea it can hold and manage, and then it kneels before what it has made.

Ego v. Being

Make no image, and bow to no thing you can carve or set up before you. The mind loves to take what is limitless and freeze it into a form, a symbol, a fixed idea it can hold and manage, and then it kneels before what it has made.

But the sacred is formless. It is the living presence beneath all appearances, and the moment you mistake an object for it you have kept the shape and lost the reality. Bow to no carved thing, because whatever you can shape and stand up in your land is not that presence, and to worship the form is to turn from what is real.

Live Leviticus 26:1 today

  1. Watch for the moment your mind announces that it has someone or something figured out, your job, your partner, yourself. Hold the verdict loosely and leave room for the thing to be more than your picture of it.
  2. Listen to one person today without matching them to the version of them you keep in your head. Let what they actually say change the picture.
  3. When you catch yourself defending an opinion online or in a meeting as if your life depended on it, ask quietly whether you are protecting the truth or just the shape you carved for it.

Which of my certainties am I kneeling to without ever having questioned it?
