Leviticus 6:13 Meaning Fire Shall Be Kept Burning

Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out.

What does Leviticus 6:13 mean?

Every flame a person lives by burns down overnight, and the tending of it is the actual work. Fuel added daily makes heat, heat holds the state, the state supplies the willingness, and willingness repeated across years is what anyone later calls devotion.

Every flame a person lives by burns down overnight, and the tending of it is the actual work.

Fuel added daily makes heat, heat holds the state, the state supplies the willingness, and willingness repeated across years is what anyone later calls devotion. The wood gets carried before dawn by someone who feels nothing in particular that morning.

A cold altar is not a neutral thing; it is evidence that the offering stopped mattering to somebody before the flame went out. Relighting costs far more than feeding. Anyone treating their own fire as a mood will wait for the mood and call the waiting patience, then pay for it by starting from ash every season when a few minutes a day would have kept the heat.

Live Leviticus 6:13 today

  1. Pick the smallest version of the thing you want to keep alive, ten minutes of reading, five minutes of prayer, one page written, and do it today at a time you can actually repeat tomorrow. Keep it small enough that a bad night cannot cancel it.
  2. Tell one person what your small daily thing is and ask them to check in on Friday. Not to push you, just so it exists outside your own head.
  3. On the day you feel nothing and have no time, do the two minute version instead of skipping. Keeping a little heat is cheap, starting from cold costs weeks.

What used to matter to me that I have let go cold, and what would the two minute version of it be tonight?

Tao Te Ching 64

A great tree begins as a sprout, a long journey begins under your feet. What lasts is built by small repeated motions, not by one large effort.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said no great thing is made suddenly, and pointed at the fig: it needs blossom, then fruit, then ripening. Daily practice is the whole method, not a warm up for it.

Zen · Dogen

Sitting is not a means to enlightenment, it is the practice itself, done every morning whether the morning feels holy or not. The sweeping and the cooking in a monastery are the training, not chores around it.
