What does Luke 10:23 mean?

You have seen a thousand sunrises and not truly seen one. The light on an ordinary morning, the face of someone you love, the simple miracle that anything exists at all: it is all here, endlessly, and yet the mind slides over it, labeling and moving on, hunting for something more interesting elsewhere.

Ego v. Being

You have seen a thousand sunrises and not truly seen one. The light on an ordinary morning, the face of someone you love, the simple miracle that anything exists at all: it is all here, endlessly, and yet the mind slides over it, labeling and moving on, hunting for something more interesting elsewhere. To have eyes and not see is the strange condition of a life lived through concepts.

What is called blessed here is the eye that actually sees, the awareness present enough to meet what is in front of it as if freshly, without the film of thought between. This seeing is not about witnessing rare events. It is a way of perceiving in which the ordinary reveals its depth, in which a leaf or a face becomes luminous simply because you are fully here to receive it. Nothing needs to be added to your life for this. The things are already before you. Become present enough to see them, and in that seeing the world quietly comes alive.

Live Luke 10:23 today

  1. On your commute today, put the phone away for five minutes and actually look out the window. Let the light, the trees, the faces be interesting without needing to be useful.
  2. Look at the face of someone in your house tonight the way you would look at a stranger's photograph, with real curiosity. See the person, not the role they play in your day.
  3. In the grocery line or a waiting room, instead of reaching for your screen, let your eyes rest on something ordinary and stay with it. Boredom is usually just attention that has not landed yet.

What have you been looking at for years without really seeing?
