Luke 11:17 Meaning But He

But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. A house divided against itself falls.

What does Luke 11:17 mean?

A mind at war with itself cannot stand, and this is the whole condition of the ego. It is built on the belief in separation, and separation sets one part of the mind against another, so that it is forever attacking what it also depends upon.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind at war with itself cannot stand, and this is the whole condition of the ego. It is built on the belief in separation, and separation sets one part of the mind against another, so that it is forever attacking what it also depends upon. Such a house cannot hold, because its very foundation is the wish to be divided, and division is another word for collapse.

Healing is not the winning of the inner war but the ending of it. When the mind stops taking sides against itself and remembers it is one, the desolation lifts, for there was never a real enemy within, only the belief in two. What falls is not the mind but the illusion that it could ever truly be split.

Kingdom: the mind as a whole, which stands when it is undivided and crumbles when it turns against itself. House: the individual mind, sound only in its wholeness, falling apart the moment it believes it is set against itself.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

A person is a kind of household with many members: the will, the instincts, the ideals, the parts kept hidden out of shame. When these are set against each other, when the daylight self declares war on everything in itself it dislikes, the whole structure begins to weaken from inside.

This is what a breakdown often is. So much energy goes into holding one half of the personality down that little is left for living, and the person grows empty and stalled. A house does not fall because an enemy breaks in; it falls because its own members stop pulling together. Strength returns only when the warring parts inside a person are reconciled, so that the whole household can stand and act as one.

Live Luke 11:17 today

  1. Name the two sides of yourself that have been arguing all week, then stop refereeing and ask what they both actually want. Usually it is the same thing.
  2. Instead of taking sides in a family or group chat disagreement, say the one sentence that both people could agree with. Watch how fast the heat drops.
  3. When you feel yourself splitting in a meeting, saying one thing while thinking another, stop and bring the two together in a plain sentence. Being one thing is less tiring than managing two.

Where am I fighting a war inside myself and calling it being careful?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

What is at war inside itself cannot last. Wholeness holds, while a thing split against itself pulls itself apart.

Bhagavad Gita

The mind divided is its own enemy, and the mind at peace with itself is its own best friend. The same mind plays both parts.

Stoicism · Seneca

A person who wants two opposite things is pulled apart by their own hands. Peace begins when the wanting becomes one.
