Luke 11:39 Meaning The Lord Said to Him

The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

What does Luke 11:39 mean?

A mind can labor endlessly on appearances and never touch the place where the trouble actually lives. Polishing the surface of a life while the inside seethes with attack is the ego's favorite arrangement, because it keeps attention on the body and the world and away from the one thing that could heal.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind can labor endlessly on appearances and never touch the place where the trouble actually lives. Polishing the surface of a life while the inside seethes with attack is the ego's favorite arrangement, because it keeps attention on the body and the world and away from the one thing that could heal. The cleaning was never really about the cup.

What needs correction is not the outer form but the thought behind it. When the mind releases the hunger to condemn and lets love replace it, the inside is made clean, and then there is nothing left in the vessel that any outer scrubbing was ever meant to hide.

Cup and platter: the outer form of a life, the surface of body and behavior the ego keeps polishing so the mind need never look within Pharisees: the part of the mind that trusts appearances, working hard on what shows while leaving the hidden thought untouched

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

So much effort goes into the surface, the presentable image, the clean outer form that others admire. This is the work of the ego, forever polishing its appearance while ignoring what churns beneath. A life can look flawless and still be driven inwardly by grasping and unrest.

The inward part full of ravening is not a moral condemnation so much as a description of the unobserved mind, hungry and never satisfied, taking and taking. No amount of outer cleaning touches it. Only awareness does. When you turn your attention inward and simply see the grasping without feeding it, it begins to lose its power. The change that matters starts within, because the outside was never where the trouble lived.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

There is a familiar trick of keeping the outside clean while the inside stays foul. A person can polish the appearance, the reputation and manners others see, and leave untouched the greed and cruelty living underneath. The two can exist in the same man at once.

What is hidden does not go away by being covered. The darker matter kept out of sight still works from within and shapes what a person does. Real honesty means turning to the inside that was ignored and facing what is kept there, because those hidden things, and not the polished surface, are what a person actually is.

SUFISM

Sufism

A cup polished to a gleam outside can still be foul within, and what a person drinks comes from the inside, not the shine. The fault is caring how one appears while greed sits untouched underneath. Scrubbing the surface for onlookers hides the rot; it never touches it.

The honest work runs the other way: reach in, name the grasping, and empty it before God, who sees the inside plainly. The One at this table looks straight past the rim, and that gaze is a mercy, showing where the real cleaning begins.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Character is a polish applied to the outside of a man, and it can be applied beautifully while the inside stays exactly as it was, greedy, violent, calculating. Society rewards the polish, because society only ever sees the outside of the cup.

Morality of this kind is repression, and whatever is repressed goes on working underground, gathering force. The inside cannot be scrubbed by rules, since the one enforcing them is the same mind doing the extorting. When greed is watched fully, without condemning it or excusing it, it loosens its grip, and the outside becomes clean by itself, having nothing left to hide.

Live Luke 11:39 today

  1. Before you post or send anything today that is meant to make you look a certain way, ask yourself quietly what is actually true underneath it. You can still send it. Just stop lying to yourself about why.
  2. If you are polite to someone while resenting them, let the resentment be the thing you work on, not the politeness. Try to actually wish them well for thirty seconds before you reply.
  3. When you are stressed and tempted to tidy your desk or reorganize your inbox instead of facing the real problem, catch it and sit with the real problem for five minutes first.

Where am I working hard on the outside of something so I never have to look inside it?

Tao Te Ching 38

When the inner virtue is gone, people fill the gap with ritual and appearance. The more elaborate the outside, the emptier the inside has become.

Zen

Polishing a tile will never make it a mirror. The work has to happen in a different place than the one you keep rubbing.

You cannot be well dressed and inwardly at war and call that a good life. Attend to what you actually are before you attend to how you are seen.
