Luke 11:44 Meaning Woe to You

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like hidden graves, and the men who walk over them don’t know it.

What does Luke 11:44 mean?

A grave you cannot see is dangerous precisely because no one knows it is there. People can carry buried, unacknowledged things inside them, covered over by a respectable surface, and pass them to others while no one is aware.

A grave you cannot see is dangerous precisely because no one knows it is there. People can carry buried, unacknowledged things inside them, covered over by a respectable surface, and pass them to others while no one is aware.

The warning is aimed at those who look clean on the outside while something rots underneath, unowned. The trouble is not the darkness itself, since everyone carries some. The trouble is pretending it is not there. What a person refuses to see in himself does not disappear; it leaks out and touches everyone who comes near him.

Live Luke 11:44 today

  1. Think of a reaction you had this week that you quietly explained away. Give it one honest minute instead of the explanation.
  2. Ask someone who knows you well what you are like when you are stressed, and let their answer land without defending yourself.
  3. When you snap at someone over something small today, say so plainly instead of letting it pass as nothing. Naming it out loud keeps it from leaking into the rest of the day.

What do people around you seem to sense in you that you have not admitted to yourself?
