Luke 12:36 Meaning Be Like Men Watching for Their Lord

Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the wedding feast; that when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him.

What does Luke 12:36 mean?

To wait like this is not to stand around hoping for some future arrival. It is to be awake now, alert and present, so that whenever life knocks you are already here to answer.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To wait like this is not to stand around hoping for some future arrival. It is to be awake now, alert and present, so that whenever life knocks you are already here to answer. The knock never comes at the hour the mind expects. It comes in this breath, this encounter, this ordinary moment you were about to overlook.

Most people are asleep inside, lost in thought, and the moment passes unopened. But if you are present, you open the door at once, because presence is nothing other than your readiness to meet life fully the instant it actually arrives.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The lord who returns is the higher self coming back to the waking person, and the wedding is the inner union where the 2 natures in a body join as one. A person is asked to stay in a poised alertness, awake at the door of consciousness rather than dulled by sleep, so that when the higher awareness rises and presses at the threshold, it is admitted at once without delay.

The knock is the pressure of that awakening felt inside, and the immediate opening is the readiness to let it through the moment it comes. What waits in a person is not an event on a calendar but a state of inner attention that keeps the door of the mind unlatched, so the higher self enters the instant it arrives.

Lord: the higher self returning to the waking person to take up its place Wedding: the inner marriage where the 2 natures within a body are joined as one Door: the threshold of consciousness where the higher awareness is either admitted or shut out

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Waiting is itself the meditation, though not the kind that leans toward the future, which is only desire wearing a spiritual face. It is the alertness of a man who has no idea when the knock will come and so cannot afford to drowse inside his thoughts.

Everything turns on the immediacy. Any gap between the knock and the opening is filled with thought: interpreting, doubting, deciding, and by the time the mind has finished, whatever came has already moved on. Openness has to be a continuous condition rather than a response, so that when the moment arrives there is nobody to consult and the door already stands open.

Live Luke 12:36 today

  1. Put the phone in another room for twenty minutes and stay awake to whatever is actually happening, the sounds in the building, the light changing, your own breathing.
  2. When someone starts talking to you while you are in the middle of something, lift your eyes and be there for the first ten seconds. Most of what matters arrives at a bad time.
  3. In a day that gets interrupted again and again, meet each interruption as the real thing in front of you instead of the obstacle to your plan. The day is made of these.

If something good knocked at a completely inconvenient moment today, would you be awake to answer?

Zen · Dogen

Awakening is not an event in the future, it is this very act of being fully here. The door you are waiting at is the one you are standing in.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Confine yourself to the present. Each moment arrives once, at a time you did not choose, and meeting it is the whole of your work.

Sufism · Sufi saying

The friend of God is a child of the present moment, holding nothing of yesterday and reaching for nothing of tomorrow. The guest arrives unannounced, so stay dressed to open the door.
