Luke 12:39 Meaning But Know This

But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into.

What does Luke 12:39 mean?

You cannot know the hour when unconsciousness will come for you, when a situation or a person will trigger the old reactive pattern and take over the house of your inner life. This is why the invitation is always to watch, to stay alert, not tomorrow but now.

Ego v. Being

You cannot know the hour when unconsciousness will come for you, when a situation or a person will trigger the old reactive pattern and take over the house of your inner life. This is why the invitation is always to watch, to stay alert, not tomorrow but now.

The one who is present is not broken into, because awareness is awake at the door. The thief slips in only when you have drifted into thought, lost in past or future, absent from this moment. When you stay awake in the Now, the reaction cannot enter unnoticed and take you over.

Live Luke 12:39 today

  1. Learn the first signal in your own body, the tight jaw, the heat in the chest, the hand already typing. When you feel it today, name it quietly to yourself and the reaction loses most of its grip.
  2. In the group chat or the email thread that always pulls you in, wait before you answer. Read it twice, let the first hot sentence pass unsent, and reply from the version of you who is actually here.
  3. In traffic or a tense meeting, feel your feet on the floor. Keep a little attention in your body while the pressure is on, and the old pattern cannot run the room without you knowing.

Where does my reaction usually get in before I see it coming?

Guard your mind the way you would guard a city at its gate. Anger and craving slip in only where attention has wandered off.

Tao Te Ching

Water overcomes the hard not by striking it but by staying soft and unhurried. The one who stays settled is not knocked over by what arrives.

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not the event that upsets you but the judgment you add to it, and that judgment takes hold the moment you stop watching it form. Watch the first thought and you are already free of being carried by it.
