Luke 13:25 Meaning When Once the Master of the House

When once the master of the house has risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ then he will answer and tell you, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’

What does Luke 13:25 mean?

There is a season when the ruling awareness within rises and seals the passage, and the parts of the self left outside find the way in closed. The master of the house is the governing spirit of a person, the higher self that owns the body; the house is that body, and the shut door is the moment inner access is no longer open to a will that waited too long.

Esoteric

There is a season when the ruling awareness within rises and seals the passage, and the parts of the self left outside find the way in closed. The master of the house is the governing spirit of a person, the higher self that owns the body; the house is that body, and the shut door is the moment inner access is no longer open to a will that waited too long. Those standing without are the outer faculties knocking with the mouth, crying Lord, Lord, while the depths answer that it does not know where they come from, because a self that lived entirely on the surface has no root in the inner regions it now begs to enter.

The not-knowing is exact: the depth cannot recognize what never descended into it. What was never lived from within remains a stranger to the within.

Master of the house: the governing spirit within, the higher self that owns and rules the body. House: the body as the dwelling in which the inner and outer selves live. Door: the passage into inner awareness, which can stand open or be sealed shut.

Live Luke 13:25 today

  1. Take one belief you say about yourself and ask when you last actually lived it. Then do one small, unglamorous version of it today, with no one watching.
  2. In a conversation where you would normally quote someone smarter, say what you yourself have found instead, even if it is smaller and less tidy. It will be yours.
  3. Under pressure, when the easy move is to perform competence you do not feel, say the honest thing. I do not know yet. Being known from the inside begins with telling the truth about the inside.

What do you say about yourself that you have not yet lived from the inside?

Zen

A teacher asked for the student's own answer, not a quotation. Borrowed words, however correct, do not get recognized at the gate.

Sufism · al-Ghazali

He writes that he could describe the whole path before he had tasted any of it, and that knowing the words of it is not the same as having walked it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He warns against people who can recite the philosophy fluently and have never once practiced it. The words are a coat, not a character.
