Luke 14:5 Meaning He Answered Them

He answered them, “Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn’t immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

What does Luke 14:5 mean?

Every mind already knows how to answer this, because when something it treasures has fallen, it does not consult a rule before reaching in to save it. The ego keeps its rigid laws only for others and only when nothing of its own is at stake.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Every mind already knows how to answer this, because when something it treasures has fallen, it does not consult a rule before reaching in to save it. The ego keeps its rigid laws only for others and only when nothing of its own is at stake. Show it a real loss it cares about, and the rule dissolves at once into rescue.

The lesson is that love was always the natural response, and the delay was never real. A mind that would rush to lift its own from the pit already carries the willingness to lift a brother the same way. The rule that seemed to forbid it was only the fear that had not yet been questioned.

Ass or ox: what the mind holds dear and will not abandon, the treasured part of itself it rescues without hesitation Pit: the fallen state of guilt and separation, the hole into which a mind slips and from which love reaches to draw it out

  1. The next time you catch yourself about to explain why you cannot help with something, pause and ask whether you would move instantly if it were your own child or your own car in the ditch. If the answer is yes, the reason you gave was never the real reason.
  2. Someone in your group chat or your inbox is clearly struggling and you have a tidy policy about staying out of it. Set the policy down for ten minutes and send the message you would send to your closest friend.
  3. When you are stretched thin and a request lands at the worst possible moment, watch for the rule your mind reaches for to protect you. You can still say no, but say it without dressing it up as principle.

Where am I keeping a rule for other people that I would drop in a second for myself?

The same truth in other traditions

Mencius

Seeing a child about to fall into a well, anyone reaches out before thinking. The response is not learned from rules, it rises on its own, and that spontaneous reaching is proof of what the heart already is.

Tao Te Ching 38

When goodness has to be enforced by rules, the living thing has already been lost. What flows naturally needs no law to command it.

Talmud · Yoma 85b

The sabbath was given to you, not you to the sabbath. Saving a life sets aside every rule, because the rule was always in service of the life.
