EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

He longs to fill himself with the husks the pigs eat, and no one gives him anything. Here the hunger of the ego is laid bare. It reaches for form after form, certain the next thing will finally make it whole, but every form is husks, with no substance that can reach the emptiness inside.

The world gives him nothing because the world was never the source of what he needs. This is the point many people reach when every external thing has failed them. The hunger stays because he never truly wanted husks; he wanted the wholeness he felt before he left, and no possession can give it back.

Live Luke 15:16 today

  1. When you reach for your phone out of that hollow feeling rather than for something specific, pause with your hand on it. Let the empty moment be empty and see what the hunger is really asking for.
  2. Instead of sending the message that fishes for reassurance, call someone and ask how they are. Being with a person is food; being reassured is a husk.
  3. After a long day, before the next episode or the next snack or the next scroll, sit still for two minutes. The restlessness you meet there is the truest thing you will learn today.

What have I been hoping would fill me that has never managed it yet?

Buddhism · Second Noble Truth

Suffering grows out of thirst, the reaching for one more thing. The reaching itself is what aches, not the thing you failed to get.

Tao Te Ching 46

There is no greater poverty than wanting more. The one who knows enough is already rich.

Sufism · Rumi

You keep eating from the empty plate and wonder why you are starving. The hunger is a message, pointing to the one thing that could actually fill you.
