Luke 15:25 Meaning Now His Elder Son Was

Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

What does Luke 15:25 mean?

The music and dancing heard from the house is the orbiting harmony of the inner heavens, the planets circling their sun, which is the higher self drawing near. The elder son stands out in the field, the working mind still lost in the world and its labor, and only as he approaches the house, his own inner being, does the sound of that celestial circling reach him.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The music and dancing heard from the house is the orbiting harmony of the inner heavens, the planets circling their sun, which is the higher self drawing near. The elder son stands out in the field, the working mind still lost in the world and its labor, and only as he approaches the house, his own inner being, does the sound of that celestial circling reach him. He hears it before he enters it. The dance is not a party but the turning of consciousness into meditation, the pull toward the center a person carries and rarely visits.

The field is the busy mind at work outside, and the house is the self within; the music is what the inner realm sounds like once a person turns toward home.

Field: the world and the working mind, busy outside itself House: yourself, the inner being a person comes home to Musick and dancing: the orbiting harmony of the inner heavens, planets circling their sun in meditation

Live Luke 15:25 today

  1. Walk the last five minutes of your commute with no podcast and no music. Let whatever is already sounding in you come up as you approach your own door.
  2. When you get home, stand in the hallway before you say anything or check anything. Arrive at the house before you start managing the house.
  3. In the middle of a hard workday, close the laptop for two minutes and sit with both feet on the floor. You are not escaping the field, you are remembering there is a house.

What are you hearing from your own doorstep that you keep walking past?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

The music of heaven is heard when a person stops the noise of their own doing. Those who stay out in the busy fields hear only their own effort.

Sufism · the sama

The whirling dervish turns on one still point, and the turning is listening, not entertainment. The harmony is already playing, the body simply joins its circling.

Pythagoras

The spheres make a music that constant exposure hides from most ears. It takes a person drawing near in stillness to hear what is always sounding.
