Luke 16:19 Meaning Now There Was a Certain Rich Man

Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.

What does Luke 16:19 mean?

A mind grown rich on outward things drapes itself in faculties it never puts to work. Purple is the regal wisdom and understanding a person is born able to wear, and fine linen is the truth that could clothe the inner life, yet here they hang on an ego that feasts only on the seen.

Esoteric

A mind grown rich on outward things drapes itself in faculties it never puts to work. Purple is the regal wisdom and understanding a person is born able to wear, and fine linen is the truth that could clothe the inner life, yet here they hang on an ego that feasts only on the seen. The self swells daily on what the body eats and the eyes take in, mistaking abundance for depth, while the higher garments sit on it as decoration and nothing more.

To fare sumptuously every day is to feed the surface and leave the wisdom draped over it unused. The riches are real; the man wearing them looks entirely outward, and so lives clothed in what he never becomes.

Purple: the regal wisdom and understanding a person can wear, the color of a mind given to inner experience Fine linen: the truth and clarity that could clothe the inner life

Live Luke 16:19 today

  1. Look at the books, courses and saved articles you own and have not used. Pick one small thing from one of them and actually do it today.
  2. The next time you are tempted to quote something wise in a group chat, hold it back and live it instead. Say the kind thing rather than the clever thing.
  3. When a day gets rich with small pleasures, good food, good screens, good noise, pause once and ask what any of it fed. Enjoy it and still know the difference.

What wisdom are you wearing that you have never once put to work?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not enough to carry the philosopher's cloak, you have to live the thing. The outfit proves nothing about the person inside it.

Tao Te Ching 12

Too much color blinds the eye, too much flavor dulls the tongue. Feeding the senses every day leaves the inner life starved.

Zen

A finely bound book of recipes feeds no one. Wisdom you only wear is a meal described and never eaten.
