Luke 17:21 Meaning Neither Will They Say

neither will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ for behold, God’s Kingdom is within you.

What does Luke 17:21 mean?

The mind searches the horizon for its peace, pointing here and there, certain that what it lacks must lie in some other place or time. But every outward search only confirms the belief that the treasure is missing, and so the search can never end where it looks.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind searches the horizon for its peace, pointing here and there, certain that what it lacks must lie in some other place or time. But every outward search only confirms the belief that the treasure is missing, and so the search can never end where it looks. What is sought as though far away has never been anywhere but within.

Heaven is not a location the body travels to; it is the mind's own natural state, covered over by the dream of separation and waiting only to be recognized. To stop scanning the distance and turn inward is to find that nothing was ever lost. The kingdom is a present fact of the mind, and the seeking itself was the only thing that hid it.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You will not find what you are looking for by scanning the horizon or waiting for some future arrival of meaning. The search itself, the endless looking here and there, is the mind's way of postponing the one place it has never actually checked: this present moment, as it is right now.

The kingdom is not a place or a future event. It is the depth of awareness available to you the instant you stop looking outward and rest as the consciousness in which all seeking happens. It was never lost, never elsewhere, never later. It is within you now, prior to any thought that tells you otherwise.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The kingdom is not a place that arrives on a calendar or waits behind a distant horizon. This power is the creative imagination within you, present now, needing no journey to reach. People point outward because they expect rescue from somewhere else, from a leader, a sign, a change in the weather of the world. That expectation keeps them waiting forever. Nothing outside will ever ferry them across.

The kingdom is the ability to assume a state and feel it as fact until the outer world matches. It sits inside, unused in most, sovereign in the few who turn to it. A person governs his life from the mood he consents to occupy. The kingdom within is that consenting power, already his, already enough.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The rule of the divine has no location on any map and no arrival date on any calendar, because it is a state already seated inside the one who searches. Every pointing finger toward a here or a there sends the seeker outward, away from the only ground where the thing lives, which is the inner space of a person's own awareness. What religion projects onto a distant heaven or a future age is a condition of consciousness available now, in the quiet center behind the eyes and the breath.

The searching itself is the mistake, since it treats as far and later what is already near and present. The kingdom is the settled, governing awareness a person carries inside their own body.

Kingdom: the inner governing awareness, the sovereign stillness seated within a person rather than any place or coming age

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

People keep pointing outward, expecting the thing they long for to arrive from some far place or some special location. But what they are seeking was never outside them.

The center that gives life its meaning sits inside the human soul, in the deep ground where each person is joined to something whole and complete. The search fails as long as it looks for a place on the map. It succeeds only when a person turns inward and finds that the wholeness they wanted has been waiting there the whole time.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

There is a persistent temptation to believe that the good order you long for exists somewhere out there, in a distant place, a future revolution, a leader who will arrive and set the world right. This is a way of avoiding the terrible responsibility of your own being. The kingdom is not a location. It is a mode of orientation, a way of aiming yourself at what is highest, and it can only be established in the one place you actually have dominion over.

That place is your own heart, your own conduct, the small arena of your immediate life. If you cannot make order there, in yourself and in the room you occupy, you will find it nowhere. Start by ruling well the kingdom you already have.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

People search the far distance for the good they already carry, pointing here and there while the thing they want sits closer than their own breath. No journey reaches it. The answer was never a place on any map. It waits in the inner life, in the pictures and beliefs a person keeps about who he is.

What a man calls his outer luck is mostly the weather of his inside world made visible. When the kingdom within shifts, the self-image and the pictures it holds, the country around him slowly shifts to match. The good he was pointing at was always a turn inward away.

SUFISM

Sufism

Nearer than the jugular vein: closeness that was never broken A line from the Quran places God closer to a person than the blood moving in their own neck. Anyone waiting for something holy to arrive from elsewhere keeps scanning the distance, and the scanning fills the years. No journey is needed and no gap has to be closed, because the closeness was there the whole time.

Qalb: The heart Al-Ghazali treats the heart as the part of a person that can know God. Sufis repeat a saying in which God states that heaven and earth cannot hold him, though the heart of his servant can. Someone hunting for the holy in famous places is searching spaces far too big, when the meeting happens in one small spot they carry everywhere.

He who knows himself knows his Lord: the way in runs through yourself Sufis repeat this line constantly, and Ibn Arabi returns to it on nearly every subject. A person told that God is close often has no idea where to begin, having spent years paying attention to everything except themselves. A person who looks plainly at their own fear, hunger and daily habits finds the same thing they were hunting for outside.

Ḥijāb: The veil Al-Ghazali describes layers of veils, dark and bright, hanging between a person and God, every one of them on our side. That explains how someone can stand next to something enormous and feel nothing: the light is not missing, the eyes are covered. So the search moves outward, on the assumption that the emptiness belongs to the world, when it belongs to the one looking.

Ḥuḍūr al-qalb: Presence of heart Al-Ghazali's term for having your attention where your body already is, rather than running ahead or behind. A scattered person can stand in the most sacred building on earth and feel nothing, then feel the whole thing open up while washing dishes at home. Whether anything shows up depends on whether somebody was home for it, which is why changing location so rarely helps.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

The mind is a pointing finger, always aimed at some elsewhere: another place, another teacher, another time when the thing will finally arrive. This is exactly how it survives, because the moment seeking stops, the seeker is exposed as a fiction. The Pharisees asking when the kingdom comes are asking in time, and the answer refuses time altogether.

Within does not mean hidden somewhere inside the body, waiting to be excavated. It means the awareness in which every here and there appears, already present, never absent for a single moment. A man searching for his own eyes will search forever, and the search itself is the only obstacle.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

People spend their lives scanning the horizon for the place where they will finally be happy, the promotion, the house, the arrival that fixes everything. But the state a person lives in is generated on the inside, in the meaning they assign and the emotion that meaning fires, and no location on earth can hand that to someone who has not built it within.

A man can walk into paradise carrying hell in his chest, or meet a hard day already rich. The power was never out there waiting to be found. It is the sovereignty you run from within, the ability to choose your focus and your meaning right where you stand.

Live Luke 17:21 today

  1. When the pull comes to scroll for something better than this moment, put the phone down and stay in the room for one minute instead. The thing you were reaching for is usually not on the screen.
  2. With someone you are with today, stop half waiting for a better conversation and give this one your whole attention. Put the phone out of sight while you do it.
  3. In traffic, in a grocery line, in the gap between meetings, stop treating the wait as time to get through. Breathe once and let where you are be enough for the length of that breath.

What am I searching for that is already here, in this room, right now?
