Luke 2:41 Meaning His Parents Went Every Year to Jerusalem

His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

What does Luke 2:41 mean?

Jerusalem is the city of God within a person, the inner center where the promise is kept and fulfilled, and the going up to it every year is the steady inward turn a person makes toward his own awareness rather than toward the world. Passover is the crossing from one state to another, the passing over from what a person has been into what he now assumes himself to be.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Jerusalem is the city of God within a person, the inner center where the promise is kept and fulfilled, and the going up to it every year is the steady inward turn a person makes toward his own awareness rather than toward the world. Passover is the crossing from one state to another, the passing over from what a person has been into what he now assumes himself to be.

The parents making the journey are the conditions that carry a person toward his own birth in God, for every figure in the story is a state within you and not a family in history. Scripture is your own life written in advance, the account of God waking up inside a man and rising from the skull where he was buried. The feast returns each year because the crossing is not made once. A person passes over into a new state each time he leaves the old feeling behind and settles fully into the one he wants to live.

Live Luke 2:41 today

  1. Pick a small return point today, your first coffee, the walk to the car, the elevator. Use it to step out of the feeling you woke up in and settle into the one you actually want to live from.
  2. When you see someone you know well, family at dinner, a coworker at the kettle, meet them from the new state instead of the usual one. Same person, different place you are standing.
  3. In traffic or a long grocery line, feel the old mood pull at you again. Cross over once more, without judging yourself for having drifted.

Where in your day could you make that inward turn, again?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

The one you are seeking lives in the small space within the heart, not in any place you could travel to. Turning inward is the only pilgrimage that reaches it.

Zen

Practice is returning, again and again, to the same seat. Nothing is accomplished once and kept; the crossing is made each morning.
