Luke 20:17 Meaning But He Looked at Them and Said

But he looked at them and said, “Then what is this that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected was made the chief cornerstone?’

What does Luke 20:17 mean?

What the fearful mind casts aside as worthless is the very thing on which its peace depends. The builders are the plans of the ego, forever constructing a self out of judgment and defense, and the one stone they will not use is innocence, for innocence has no place in a structure raised on guilt.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

What the fearful mind casts aside as worthless is the very thing on which its peace depends. The builders are the plans of the ego, forever constructing a self out of judgment and defense, and the one stone they will not use is innocence, for innocence has no place in a structure raised on guilt. Yet what they reject does not vanish. It waits, and in the end it alone holds everything together.

So the correction the mind refused becomes the foundation it could not do without. Forgiveness looks useless to a mind bent on being right, until the day it discovers that nothing it built ever stood, and only the thing it threw away can bear the weight of what is real.

Stone: the innocence the ego discards as worthless, the single truth on which a real peace can rest Builders: the mind's ego-plans, forever raising a self out of judgment and defense Head of the corner: the place where the rejected innocence proves to be the one thing holding all together

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

What gets thrown away is often exactly what was needed. Builders judge each stone against the plan they already have and discard the one that seems wrong. Yet that discarded stone turns out to hold the whole structure together.

The mind treats itself the same way. We keep the traits that fit the picture we want to present and reject the rest as useless or shameful. But the part we cast off carries the energy we are missing. A person becomes whole only when that rejected piece is taken back and given its place at the center.

Live Luke 20:17 today

  1. Think of the quality in yourself you treat as a liability, being too soft, too slow to judge, too quick to forgive. Try using it on purpose today instead of apologizing for it.
  2. Let someone off the hook today, in the group chat or at dinner, where you have every right to make the point. See what the room does when nobody has to be wrong.
  3. Under pressure, when being right feels like the only safe ground, try the unguarded sentence instead: I'm sorry, or I don't know, or you may be right. The thing that feels useless is the thing that holds.

What have I thrown away as worthless that might be the one thing holding everything together?

The clay makes the pot, but the pot is useful because of the emptiness inside. What looks like nothing is the part that does the work.

The useless tree is the one no axe wants, so it stands, giving shade for a hundred years. Worth is not what the builders measure.

What you discarded on the way to the goal turns out to be the goal. Only an empty hand can hold anything.
