Orthodox

Nobody at that table could rule himself out. Years of following close up gave no immunity, and men who had left everything still had to wonder whether the treachery would be theirs. That self-doubt is the safer condition.

Before receiving the bread and cup, the Church still prays not to betray, asking each person to look inward rather than scan the room for a likelier candidate. Guarding your own heart is work you can actually do.

Live Luke 22:23 today

  1. Before you decide who in your life is the problem, sit with the plain question of where you have been less than honest this week. Answer it without making a case for yourself.
  2. In a conflict at home or at work, resist the urge to say "well, what about what you did." Name your own part first and let it stand on its own.
  3. When a group chat starts picking someone apart, do not add your line. Ask quietly whether you would come out well if the group turned the same attention on you.

Where am I most confident the fault belongs to someone else?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Turn the examination inward. You hold authority over your own mind and almost nothing else, so that is where the watch is kept.

Buddhism · the Dhammapada

See your own faults as clearly as you see the faults of others, and do not winnow another person's while hiding your own. The one who blames inward grows; the one who blames outward stalls.

Sufism · Rumi

The real work is sweeping your own courtyard. Looking for the fault outside yourself is how it stays safe inside.
