Ego v. Being

The deepest pain a human can bear is met here without flight. The agony is not numbed. Felt completely, so completely that the body itself seems to weep, it is carried rather than fled. Most people run from suffering like this, and the running only feeds it. Here the pain is entered all the way to the ground.

Something opens when a person stops resisting what is unbearable and lets it move fully through. The prayer grows earnest because staying present inside such anguish takes everything a person has. Facing the pain whole, rather than fleeing it, is what carries him through.

  1. When something hurts tonight and you reach for your phone to make the feeling go away, put the phone face down and stay with it for two minutes instead. Let it be as big as it actually is.
  2. If someone you love is in real pain, resist the urge to fix it or lighten it. Sit with them in it, say almost nothing, and let your presence be the thing that carries them.
  3. In the hardest hour of a hard day, a meeting going badly, bad news in your inbox, stop trying to get out from under it. Feel your feet on the floor, breathe once all the way down, and let the difficulty be exactly where you are.

What pain have you been outrunning that might soften if you finally stood still inside it?

Buddhism · The Second Arrow

The first arrow is the pain itself. The second is everything we add by fighting it, and the Buddha taught that the second one is the one we can set down. Suffering felt cleanly, without the struggle against it, is lighter than suffering resisted.

Rumi · The Guest House

Rumi says to welcome every visitor at the door, even grief that sweeps the house empty. What arrives to shake us may be clearing room for something, so meet it at the threshold instead of bolting the door.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that what stands in the way becomes the way. The obstacle is not the interruption of the path, it is the material the path is made from.
