Luke 22:46 Meaning And Said to Them

and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

What does Luke 22:46 mean?

Sleep here is the mind's forgetfulness, the drowsy state in which it stops watching its own thoughts and lets fear slip in unchallenged. To be told to rise is to be called back to awareness, because a mind that is not paying attention will choose its teacher by default, and the default is fear.

Sleep here is the mind's forgetfulness, the drowsy state in which it stops watching its own thoughts and lets fear slip in unchallenged. To be told to rise is to be called back to awareness, because a mind that is not paying attention will choose its teacher by default, and the default is fear. Prayer is simply that returning of attention to love, the deliberate waking that keeps the mind from drifting into the belief that it is in danger. The temptation does not overpower a watchful mind; it only enters a sleeping one.

So the reader learns that staying awake is the whole task. Not effort, not struggle, only the willingness to keep looking toward love instead of letting the mind nod off into fear, for what is watched cannot quietly deceive it.
