Luke 22:53 Meaning When I Was with You

When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

What does Luke 22:53 mean?

There is an hour the ego calls its own, and it comes only in the dark. In the open light of the temple, where the mind stands consciously with truth, no hand is raised, for fear cannot act where it is plainly seen.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is an hour the ego calls its own, and it comes only in the dark. In the open light of the temple, where the mind stands consciously with truth, no hand is raised, for fear cannot act where it is plainly seen. It waits instead for the shadows, for the moment attention turns away, and then it moves. What seems like the sudden triumph of enemies is only the mind's own hidden guilt taking its appointed turn while love looks the other way.

The power of darkness is real only to a mind that has forgotten it is dreaming. That power lasts exactly one hour and no longer, because it borrows its whole strength from being unwatched. Bring the light of honest looking to it, and the hour ends. Fear has no hour that love cannot close simply by staying awake.

Temple: the mind held consciously in the presence of truth, the open place where fear dares not act because it would be seen Hands: the impulse to attack, the reaching outward of guilt that only moves when the mind is not watching

Live Luke 22:53 today

  1. Pick the thing you have been refusing to look at, the unopened bill, the test result, the number in the account. Open it today, in daylight, and let it be whatever size it actually is.
  2. Tell one person the thing you've been carrying alone. Said out loud to someone who cares about you, it almost always turns out smaller than it was in your head.
  3. When the 11pm dread arrives and everything feels like it's collapsing, write down the actual facts in three lines. Fear needs the dark and the vagueness to keep its power.

What have you been keeping in the dark, and how much of its weight is just the darkness?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

Fears are fed by not looking. Drag the thing into daylight, measure it honestly, and most of its size turns out to have been shadow.

Zen

A thief works by night. Light a lamp in the room and there is nothing left for him to do.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The watchful mind is not carried off. Inattention is the dark road, and attention is the one on which nothing can take you by surprise.
