Denial is the ego's oldest defense, the frightened claim to know nothing of what the mind most deeply knows. A follower, cornered by fear of the crowd, insisted he did not understand, cutting himself off from the one he loved to keep his body safe.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Denial is the ego's oldest defense, the frightened claim to know nothing of what the mind most deeply knows. A follower, cornered by fear of the crowd, insisted he did not understand, cutting himself off from the one he loved to keep his body safe. This is what every mind does when it says it cannot grasp the truth of who it is: it is not confused but afraid, choosing the smaller self because the larger one seems to cost too much.
The cock crowed in the same breath, and the sound was not a punishment but an awakening. Something in the mind will not let the denial stand unnoticed. The lesson is gentle even here. The moment fear speaks its refusal, a signal is already sounding to call the mind back home.
Cock: the inner signal that pierces denial, the voice of awakening that sounds the instant fear speaks its refusal and calls the mind back to what it knows

What keeps tapping you on the shoulder that you've been pretending not to hear?
The ache you feel when you turn away is itself the call coming back to you. The wound is where the message gets in.
The bell rings whether you were listening or not. It asks nothing of you except that you hear it.
What you deny knowing is the very thing doing the knowing. It cannot be lost, only overlooked for a while.
