Discouragement heading away from the place where hope collapsed is the ordinary condition of faith after a hard blow, and Christ joins that retreat instead of waiting to be sought.

A short walk to a village nobody can now locate carries the shape of every Mass. Scripture is opened along the road and the heart begins to burn, then bread is broken and he is recognized. Catholic worship keeps that order, word first and sacrament second, since the mind must be prepared before the eyes are opened.

The whole road is the inward move out of the flesh into higher consciousness, the second coming of the Christ within a person. 2 go, and the number 2 is the number of secrets, the sign that what walks here is hidden meaning and not a Sunday journey. They set out from Jerusalem, which is a person's own consciousness, and travel the distance it takes for the risen light to be recognized within. On that walk the indwelling Christ goes unknown at first, the abandoned inner brother unrecognized inside the very one who longs for him.

The recognition comes at the end, not the start. The traveler carries the light and does not yet see it. What was thought dead is found alive along the way.

Emmaus: the inward passage from the flesh into higher consciousness, the second coming of Christ within Jerusalem: your own consciousness, the seat from which the journey inward begins 2: the number of secrets, the mark of hidden meaning

Live Luke 24:13 today

  1. Take your discouragement for a walk today without headphones, twenty minutes, and let yourself go back over what happened. Company and movement do more for it than a screen.
  2. Tell one person the thing you have been carrying, on the walk or over a meal rather than in a text. Say it out loud and see what the saying does to it.
  3. When the afternoon feels flat and hopeless, do the two small things in order: read something true for five minutes, then eat with someone. Do not skip to the eating.

Where have I already been walked with and only worked it out afterward?

Zen · the ox-herding pictures

The seeker spends the whole search looking for something far off and finds in the end that it was never absent, only unrecognized. The looking happens while walking, not while sitting still waiting.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi writes that what you are looking for has been looking for you the whole time. The one you think you lost is already walking alongside.

Hinduism · Katha Upanishad

The Upanishad says the truth is not grasped by argument alone; it is heard, then turned over, then seen. Understanding comes in that order, and the hearing has to come first.
