Luke 24:21 Meaning But We Were Hoping That It Was

But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

What does Luke 24:21 mean?

A blueprint too small for what arrived will keep a person grieving beside the very rescue they asked for. Suffering runs on a gap: a blueprint specifying a nation set free on a schedule, against conditions that refuse the specification.

A blueprint too small for what arrived will keep a person grieving beside the very rescue they asked for.

Suffering runs on a gap: a blueprint specifying a nation set free on a schedule, against conditions that refuse the specification. The blueprint sets the meaning, the meaning sets the state, and mourning narrows perception until a man can spend hours with the risen Christ and register a stranger.

Only one of the three moves was available. The conditions had outrun the plan, and peace with the gap was no answer because nothing was missing. Changing the blueprint was the whole work, and that is the move people avoid, since a plan held long enough becomes identity. The price of keeping it is spending the road home in grief over a loss that never happened.

Live Luke 24:21 today

  1. Write down, in one sentence, the exact version of how this was supposed to go. Then ask whether you are sad about what happened or about the sentence.
  2. Ask someone who is disappointed in how something turned out what they had been picturing. Half the weight lifts the moment the picture is said out loud instead of assumed.
  3. When the plan falls apart at work or the trip gets cancelled or the diagnosis changes the year, give yourself five minutes to want the old version, then ask one plain question: what is actually here now. Answer it honestly before you decide how to feel.

What good thing might already be in front of you, unrecognized because it came in the wrong shape?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The way that can be pinned down is not the way, because any plan narrow enough to hold is already too small for what is actually moving. Loosen the specification and the thing itself can arrive.

Zen tradition

The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon, and a person can spend a life studying the finger. The map held tightly enough becomes the thing you refuse to look past.

Buddhism

Clinging is named as the root of suffering, including clinging to the version of the good outcome you decided on. The grief is in the grip, not in what happened.
