CATHOLIC
Forgiveness gets entrusted to people to hand on. The Church receives real authority to absolve, which is why sin is dealt with out loud, through a minister, and not only in the privacy of a person's own regret. Repentance means turning around, an actual change of direction, and pardon follows that turn rather than substituting for it.
Beginning in the city where his friends had failed him keeps the mission honest. Mercy is offered first to those who know exactly what they did, and from there it runs outward to every nation without shrinking, since no people and no personal history sits outside the reach of pardon.

The tradition requires turning back to be done in the open: wrongs named, the person you hurt approached directly, before the day can do its work. Private regret is not counted as the turn.
Monks gather on fixed days to state their faults aloud before the others, and the stating is part of the repair. What is spoken into a community is treated differently from what is only thought.
He tells himself that when a person is shown to be wrong, they should change course gladly and be glad to be corrected. The change of direction is the whole point, not the feeling of regret.
