There is a cleansing the mind can arrange for itself, a washing on the surface that leaves the belief in separation untouched, and there is a cleansing that comes from beyond the little self and reaches the cause. A mind honest about its own smallness makes room for the greater. It does not pretend that its own gestures of reform are the healing; it steps aside so that what is mightier than fear can enter.
The washing with water changes the outside and leaves guilt in place. The washing with Spirit and fire burns the guilt itself away, undoing at the root what mere behavior only rinses. To welcome this, a mind stops crowning its own efforts and lets a power it did not manufacture do the work it never could.
Water: the outer, surface correction the mind attempts on its own, a cleansing of behavior that leaves the belief in separation untouched
Shoes: the humble station of the little self, the part of the mind that walks the ground and knows it is not the source of healing
Fire: the correction that reaches the cause, the love that consumes guilt at its root rather than rinsing its surface
