Luke 4:21 Meaning He Began to Tell Them

He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

What does Luke 4:21 mean?

Today is the only place truth can happen. The mind lives in a scripture fulfilled long ago or due to be fulfilled somewhere ahead, because postponement keeps it safe from what is happening now.

Indian Guru

Today is the only place truth can happen. The mind lives in a scripture fulfilled long ago or due to be fulfilled somewhere ahead, because postponement keeps it safe from what is happening now.

Words on a scroll stay dead until someone becomes them, and then they are no longer information but an event in the listener. A man in that room could hear a sentence known since childhood and, for once, fail to translate it into history or hope. Fulfillment happens in ears that are awake, and nowhere else.

Live Luke 4:21 today

  1. Take a line you have known by heart for years and read it today as if you had never seen it, with your phone in another room. Let it land on you instead of filing it next to what you already think it means.
  2. The next time someone tells you something true about yourself, resist turning it into a project for next month. Let it be true right there in the conversation.
  3. When you catch yourself thinking life gets real after this deadline, this move, this season, stop and look around the room you are actually sitting in. This is the day you have been saving things for.

What am I waiting to begin, as if today were a rehearsal?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Dogen

Practice is not preparation for enlightenment, it is the thing itself, right now in this sitting. Nothing is waiting for a later date.

Stoicism · Seneca

While we postpone, life rushes past. Everyone lives as if the real living starts tomorrow, and tomorrow is the one day no one gets.

Sufism · Rumi

Do not be satisfied with the stories of those who went before you. Unfold your own myth, because a truth retold is not yet a truth lived.
