Luke 4:23 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’ ”

What does Luke 4:23 mean?

The physician is the healing power of Spirit within, and the one told to heal himself is turned back toward his own body as the field of the cure. Capernaum, the village of comfort, is a lower center in the body where the works were first felt; the country a person comes from is the flesh he was born into.

The physician is the healing power of Spirit within, and the one told to heal himself is turned back toward his own body as the field of the cure. Capernaum, the village of comfort, is a lower center in the body where the works were first felt; the country a person comes from is the flesh he was born into. To do here what was done there is to turn the healing inward, upon the home self, rather than displaying it outside. The power that mends anything at all mends first the one who carries it.

  1. Take the advice you most often give other people and apply one line of it to yourself tonight, in your own house, where no one will see you do it.
  2. Before you fix someone's problem in a group chat, ask yourself whether the same crack runs through your week. If it does, say less and go attend to it.
  3. When you are tired and short with everyone, treat yourself as the patient. Water, a walk, ten quiet minutes, then come back to the people around you.

What do you keep prescribing to others and never swallow yourself?

Establish yourself in what is right before you set about instructing anyone else. Only then is the teaching not undone by the teacher.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The work is always on your own judgments, not on the crowd's. A doctor who ignores his own fever is in no position to prescribe.

Tao Te Ching 33

To know others is a kind of wisdom. To know yourself is the deeper one, and it is the harder road.
