AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Religiousness has been made into a long face. Sadness can be practiced: scheduled, counted, displayed to others as achievement. Celebration cannot be practiced at all, and that is why it frightens the pious.

While the bridegroom is present, denial makes no sense. The disciplines were preparations for something that has now arrived at the table, and a man who goes on rehearsing his hunger in front of the feast is worshipping his own method. Fasting will have its hours, and they belong to absence, not to a guest already sitting beside him.

Live Luke 5:34 today

  1. When something good happens today, let yourself enjoy it fully instead of immediately checking what still needs doing. The enjoying is not a break from your real life.
  2. At dinner or on a call with someone you love, put the phone in another room and be openly glad to be there. Say it out loud, even if it feels like a lot.
  3. In a week that feels too heavy for happiness, take the small good thing anyway: good coffee, a song in the car, ten minutes of sun. Hardship does not require you to refuse it.

Am I turning down something good right now because I think I have not earned it yet?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The one who has found the way eats when hungry and laughs when glad, with no performance in it. Solemn faces are usually a method, not a state.

Judaism · Hasidic teaching

Serve with joy, because gloom is not humility, it is a kind of pride in your own seriousness. Where there is gladness, you were already in the right place.

Sufism · Rumi

There is a feast going on and most people are outside explaining why they cannot come in. The door was open the whole time.
