Luke 7:11 · World English Bible

Luke 7:11 Meaning Soon Afterwards

Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him.

What does Luke 7:11 mean?

The awakened higher mind moves inward toward a settled state of awareness, and Nain opens under its root as pleasantness, the calm and agreeable condition consciousness enters once the noise of the outer man quiets. What follows into that state is not a crowd of strangers but the disciplined faculties of a person who has learned to sit still and turn attention within, the trained parts of the mind that gather wherever the higher mind goes.

The much people are the untrained thoughts that trail behind, drawn along but not yet awake.

A person arrives at pleasantness not by force but by the day after, once the struggle of the previous state has passed and stillness is possible.

Nain: the pleasant and agreeable state of consciousness reached when the outer noise settles disciples: the trained faculties of a person who meditates, the mind's parts that turn inward on command city: the whole field of a person's consciousness, the built-up habits and thoughts of a lifetime

Live Luke 7:11 today

  1. Give today's ending a day after. Instead of filling the first free half hour with a screen, sit with nothing and let the leftover noise from the day run down on its own.
  2. When you meet someone today, land before you talk. One slow breath at the door, so the person gets the settled version of you instead of whatever you were carrying in from the car.
  3. In the hardest stretch of your day, stop steering for sixty seconds. No fixing, no phone, no planning, just sit in the chair and let the churn pass through you.

What in me is still stirring the water and calling it effort?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and things settle into their own clarity. The muddy water clears when you stop stirring it.

Buddhism · Samadhi

When attention is gathered and trained, ease arrives on its own. The pleasant state is not manufactured, it appears once the agitation drops.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You carry a quiet place inside you and can retire into it at any hour. No travel is needed, only the turn inward.
