Luke 7:28 Meaning For I Tell You

“For I tell you, among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptizer, yet he who is least in God’s Kingdom is greater than he.”

What does Luke 7:28 mean?

Here is a distinction between two kinds of greatness. There is greatness in the world of form, in role and achievement, and by that measure a great prophet stands very high.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Here is a distinction between two kinds of greatness. There is greatness in the world of form, in role and achievement, and by that measure a great prophet stands very high. Yet all of it still belongs to the realm of the person, the story the mind builds.

Then there is another dimension entirely, the kingdom of God, which is simply the awakened state of presence. One who has stepped into it, even as the least and most unnoticed, has touched something deeper than any achievement can reach. That is why the humblest awakened person is called greater: not because they have done more, but because they are no longer identified with doing at all. They have found the simple being beneath all their doing.

Live Luke 7:28 today

  1. Do one small unseen thing today, take out the trash, fix a typo nobody will catch, and let it stay unseen. Resist the urge to mention it.
  2. When someone starts talking about their title, their numbers or their win, be genuinely glad for them without weighing yourself against it. You can be happy for someone without entering the contest.
  3. On a day when you feel behind, stop and ask whether you are actually behind or just not performing well enough for an audience in your head. Then go back to the next real task without the commentary.

Who am I when nothing I have done is showing?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not try to be great becomes great, because greatness in the ordinary sense is still a kind of striving. What is lowest and least noticed is nearest to the source.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Do the work in front of you without clinging to the fruit of it. The doer who stops identifying with the doing has found something the achiever never touches.

Zen

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. Nothing in the resume changes, everything in the one doing it does.
