Luke 7:9 · World English Bible

Luke 7:9 Meaning When Jesus Heard These Things

When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”

What does Luke 7:9 mean?

Faith of this kind is not belief in the unseen but the mind's willingness to trust that love heals without proof, without nearness, without any condition first satisfied. What is marveled at is a mind that has stopped requiring the body and the world to cooperate before it will accept the correction, and such trust is rarer than any outward devotion, because it asks the mind to lean on love alone.

Christian Psychology

Faith of this kind is not belief in the unseen but the mind's willingness to trust that love heals without proof, without nearness, without any condition first satisfied. What is marveled at is a mind that has stopped requiring the body and the world to cooperate before it will accept the correction, and such trust is rarer than any outward devotion, because it asks the mind to lean on love alone.

So the greatness lies not in religious standing but in a single readiness to let love do its work unaided. A mind that trusts this fully has learned the one thing that makes the miracle possible: that the shift from fear to love needs nothing from the world, only the mind's consent to receive it.

Israel: the outward household of belief and religious standing, where great faith is expected and not found. Faith: the mind's willingness to trust that love heals unaided, leaning on love alone without demanding proof.

Live Luke 7:9 today

  1. Do one thing today without checking whether it worked. Send it, plant it, say it, then put the phone face down and leave the result alone.
  2. When someone tells you they are doing better, believe them without testing it. Let your face and your next question be built on trust instead of inspection.
  3. Under pressure, when the fix has not shown up yet, try saying quietly that it is already handled, and act the next five minutes as if that were true.

What proof am I waiting for before I will let myself be at peace?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

Those who trust the way do not need to see the whole road before stepping. The one who demands proof at every turn never leaves the gate.

Zhuangzi

The swimmer in the rapids does not fight the water, he goes in with it and comes out alive. His skill is a kind of trust that looks like nothing at all.

Bhagavad Gita

Act and let go of your grip on the result. The peace is in the release, not in the outcome arriving as you specified.
