Luke 8:13 Meaning Those on the Rock Are They Who

Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation.

What does Luke 8:13 mean?

There is a joy that meets truth at once and yet cannot hold it, because the welcome never reached the depths. The rock is a mind that receives gladly on the surface while nothing takes root below, and so the first pressure of fear carries the whole thing away.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a joy that meets truth at once and yet cannot hold it, because the welcome never reached the depths. The rock is a mind that receives gladly on the surface while nothing takes root below, and so the first pressure of fear carries the whole thing away. Gladness is not the same as the willingness that endures.

Temptation here is only the moment the ego offers its old teaching again, and a mind with no depth turns back because it never truly chose. This is not failure but an unfinished choosing. What was received with joy can still be received with roots, held past the hour of fear and not only in the ease before it. A mind that lets truth go deep will not be swept away when fear returns.

Rock: the shallow mind that welcomes truth on the surface while nothing takes root beneath it Root: the depth of willingness that lets truth hold when fear returns to test it

Live Luke 8:13 today

  1. Pick one small thing you felt excited about recently and do it today, on the flat day, with no excitement left. That is where roots form.
  2. Tell one person what you are trying to change, not to be cheered on, but so the choice lives somewhere outside your mood.
  3. When the day goes wrong and you feel the pull to drop everything you decided, keep one piece of it. One kept piece is a root.

What did I welcome gladly and then abandon the first time it cost me something?

Tao Te Ching

What is deeply rooted endures. Depth is built quietly, long before the storm has a name.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Enthusiasm is easy. Steadiness is the work, and only steadiness carries you through the hour when the old habit calls again.

Stoicism · Seneca

No one knows what he truly holds until something presses on it. Pressure does not break your choices, it reveals whether you made them.
