Luke 8:29 Meaning For Jesus Was Commanding the Unclean Spirit

For Jesus was commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For the unclean spirit had often seized the man. He was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters. Breaking the bonds apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert.

What does Luke 8:29 mean?

When a part of the mind is split off and denied, it does not disappear. It gathers its own energy in the dark and begins to act on its own, seizing a person from within as if a stranger had taken the controls.

Psychoanalysis

When a part of the mind is split off and denied, it does not disappear. It gathers its own energy in the dark and begins to act on its own, seizing a person from within as if a stranger had taken the controls. To others it looks like a fit or a madness.

People try to bind such a force with chains, by sheer will and restraint, but force only feeds it. The bound thing grows stronger, snaps the chains, and drives the person off alone into empty country. What was cast out cannot be ruled from outside. It grows quiet only when it is faced at last and taken back in.

  1. Take the thing you keep white-knuckling, the phone you are forcing yourself to stay off, the thought you are shoving away, and try meeting it instead. Look at it for a minute and ask what it actually wants.
  2. When someone you love is struggling, stop trying to make them stop. Sit with them, ask what it is like, and let that be enough for one conversation.
  3. Under real pressure, when you feel yourself clamping down to hold it together, loosen one notch on purpose. Breathe, slow your voice, admit you are struggling. Force is what snaps.

What have I been trying to chain down that might need to be heard instead?

Zen

Fighting a thought is feeding it. Stop wrestling, sit still, and watch it, and it loses the grip that only your struggle was giving it.

Tao Te Ching 78

What is soft overcomes what is hard. Water yields and wins where force only breaks itself on the stone.

Sufism · Rumi

The dark visitor is not an enemy to be chained but a guest to be met. Welcome it in and it has nothing left to break down the door for.
