Luke 9:13 Meaning But He Said to Them

But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”

What does Luke 9:13 mean?

The mind that counts is always afraid, for counting begins from lack and cannot arrive anywhere but scarcity. To answer a call to give with "we have no more but this" is to trust the arithmetic of the ego, which insists that what is shared must shrink.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind that counts is always afraid, for counting begins from lack and cannot arrive anywhere but scarcity. To answer a call to give with "we have no more but this" is to trust the arithmetic of the ego, which insists that what is shared must shrink. Love asks the mind to give first and reckon never, because giving is how the mind discovers what it already contains.

What seems too small was never the true measure; the little in the hand is only what fear could see. When the mind lets go of its accounting and simply offers what it has, it learns that supply was never in the loaves but in the willingness to give, and willingness has no limit.

Loaves and fishes: the small store the mind believes is all it has, the measured supply that fear insists must run out. The multitude: the many needs the mind meets with panic when it trusts scarcity instead of love.

Live Luke 9:13 today

  1. Give something today before you have worked out whether you can spare it. Ten dollars, twenty minutes, the last of the coffee. Let the arithmetic come second, or not at all.
  2. When someone asks for help and your first thought is "I have nothing left," offer the next ten minutes anyway and see what is actually there.
  3. In a week that feels thin, pick one person in your group chat and send them the thing you would have kept, the contact, the tip, the good idea. Scarcity is a feeling, not a measurement.
