Heavy with sleep is the ordinary condition of a mind lost in its own thinking, present in body but absent in awareness, dreaming its way through a life it never quite meets. The companions on the mountain are drowsy in exactly this way, and the radiance is already there, unseen.

EGO & BEING
Heavy with sleep is the ordinary condition of a mind lost in its own thinking, present in body but absent in awareness, dreaming its way through a life it never quite meets. The companions on the mountain are drowsy in exactly this way, and the radiance is already there, unseen.
Then they wake. Nothing outward is created in that instant; the light was shining the whole time. What changes is the quality of their attention. When you become fully present, no longer half-asleep in thought, you begin to perceive the aliveness that was always in front of you. Waking up is simply this: seeing what was there before you looked.

BUDDHISM
Thīna-middha: Sloth and Torpor Heaviness of body and mind, one of the five hindrances. Peter climbed the mountain to pray, and his eyelids won the argument his intention lost; this hindrance never debates with you, it settles over you like a warm blanket. The light stood on that mountain through the whole time they dozed, so what they missed was lost to weight rather than to distance. Anyone who has nodded off during evening prayers knows the ambush.
Sati: Wakefulness Attention resting on what is present. Becoming fully awake meant the mind arrived where the body had been all along: on a mountain, at night, beside the one they had followed up it. Nothing got added to the scene by their waking, but someone was finally there to receive it. This is the whole difference between being in a room and being present in it.
Dassana: Direct Seeing Knowing by looking, as opposed to knowing by hearsay. They saw the glory with their own eyes; no messenger came down the slope to describe it for them, and what they carried away was past the reach of anyone's argument. The invitation of the path runs on the same terms, come and see, which is why a sight like this cannot be handed to a friend secondhand.
Obhāsa: Radiance Light that appears as the mind grows deeply still. His shining held steady through their sleep, and drowsy eyes had no way to take it in, so the change happened entirely on their side of the seeing. Practice does much the same work as wiping a dusty window, since the brightness on the far side was never in question.
Upādāna: Clinging The grip that wants to keep hold of what pleases it. Barely awake in that brightness, Peter is already talking about three shelters, hoping poles and cloth might hold the moment in place. Grasping at a luminous experience is among the oldest wrong turns on the path, and the cloud rolls in over all of them regardless.

AWARENESS
Glory stood in front of them the whole time, and they were snoring. That is the human situation: the extraordinary is available every moment and man walks through it heavy-eyed, dreaming of yesterday and tomorrow.
Waking is not opening the eyelids; a man can walk, talk, marry and die with his eyes open and never once be present. The moment thought falls quiet, what was always shining becomes visible, and nothing had to be added to the mountain. The two standing beside him, dead by any calendar, were seen as well, because such awareness does not live in time.
