Luke 9:35 Meaning A Voice Came Out of the Cloud

A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”

What does Luke 9:35 mean?

There is a quiet certainty in the mind that fear cannot reach, and out of the very obscurity where the ego loses its way, it speaks. The cloud is not an obstacle to truth but the place where the mind's own confusions gather, and even there the recognition of the beloved Son can be heard.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a quiet certainty in the mind that fear cannot reach, and out of the very obscurity where the ego loses its way, it speaks. The cloud is not an obstacle to truth but the place where the mind's own confusions gather, and even there the recognition of the beloved Son can be heard. To be told "hear him" is to be turned from every other teacher toward the one within who has never doubted innocence.

The beloved Son is not one figure set above the rest; it is what every mind is when it stops listening to guilt. To hear him is simply to accept that this is true of oneself, and that acceptance is the whole of the turning.

Cloud: the mind's confusion, the dimness in which truth still speaks though the ego cannot see through it. Beloved Son: the innocent self that every mind is beneath its fear, the creation love has never stopped claiming as its own.

Live Luke 9:35 today

  1. Before you open your phone in the morning, give yourself two minutes of quiet and ask what you already know. Let the first honest answer count, even if it is unimpressive.
  2. In a conversation today, stop composing your reply while the other person is still talking. Just hear them, all the way to the end.
  3. When you are confused and the group chat or your inbox is full of opinions, step away from the screen for five minutes. Ask the quieter part of yourself what is true, and act on that rather than on the loudest voice.

Whose voice have you been trusting more than your own, and why?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The way is dim and hard to name, yet it is from that very dimness that everything true comes. Do not wait for clarity before you trust it.

Sufism · Rumi

There is a voice that does not use words. Stop talking long enough and you will hear that you were already being called.

Zen

You spend years looking for a teacher, and then learn that the one who never lied to you was the one inside, waiting for you to stop consulting everyone else.
